Beaumont man indicted in fatal shooting through bedroom window of former girlfriend's west end Beaumont apartment

He admitted to police that he had fired a shot into the bedroom.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A 25-year-old Beaumont man has been indicted in the shooting death of a 23-year-old man he shot through a window at his former girlfriend's Beaumont apartment.

Court documents show that Troy Delano Cheek, 25,  who is charged with the shooting death of Aaron Robert, 23, of Beaumont, had recently been broken up with by his girlfriend.

Evidence shows that Cheek was standing outside the bedroom window of his former girlfriend’s apartment at the West End Crossing apartments when the shooting happened late Saturday night, Feb. 24, 2024, according to a probable cause affidavit in the case.

Cheek admitted to police that he had fired a shot into the bedroom, according to the affidavit. A single 9mm shell was found on the ground a few feet from the bedroom window, the affidavit said.

Cheek’s ex-girlfriend told police that on Saturday night she heard a crash while in her bedroom and then noticed that Robert had been shot in the head.

She also told officers they had recently broken up and that he had not been handling it well, according to the affidavit.

Before the shooting Cheek had called her, she told police Saturday night, saying that when she told him to stop calling her he said, “I’m gonna show you.”

Cheek was also a suspect in a recent burglary of her apartment, the affidavit said.

Officers went to Cheek’s home in the 2100 block of Laurel St. and found him sitting on the front porch.

When they confronted him he yelled to his family saying not to let police search the house.

When detectives told his mother they were investigating a shooting she signed a consent form allowing them to search the house according to the affidavit.

After searching the home police found a purple SCCY 9mm handgun hidden in a compartment in a bathroom.

When detectives interviewed Cheek, he admitted shooting into the bedroom window at his ex-girlfriend’s apartment.

After a friend brought him home after hanging out with friends he took his mom’s car and drove to the West End Crossing apartments.

He told detectives that when he walked by the bedroom window he thought he heard Robert and his ex-girlfriend and became angry and fired through the window.

On Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024, Jefferson County Precinct One Justice of the Peace Naomi Doyle raised Cheek's bond from $75,000 to $850,000.

Doyle cited Cheek's criminal background saying he was a danger to the community in her decision to raise his bond.

12News found several arrests and at least two felony convictions on Cheek's record

He was sentenced in 2019 to five years in a Texas prison for injury to a child after a 1-year-old toddler died while in his custody.

In 2017 he got 10-years probation for evading arrest in a motor vehicle.
