BEAUMONT, Texas — Wednesday afternoon after dismissal time, Beaumont Independent School District Police responded to the corner of St. James Blvd. and Fannett road, a block from Beaumont United High School, after a caller reported seeing a student with a weapon.
Two students were located by police, near the campus with contraband, according to BISD Spokesperson Jackie Simien. BISD Police Chief Joseph Malbrough confirmed to 12News that officers recovered magazines full of ammo. An explosives detection dog separately found a gun in a field, where police believe the students had thrown it.
The two students did attempt to evade arrest, according to Malbrough, but were taken into custody without further incident.
The students attend Beaumont ISD alternative campuses, according to Simien.
Chief Malbrough says that at no point were Beaumont United students in any danger.
Beaumont ISD parents received the following email from the district, a little before 6:00 Wednesday evening, explaining the situation.
"On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, following the completion of dismissal, BISD Police responded to a report of an individual in possession of a weapon at St. James Street and Fannett Road. After a brief search, police located the individual and a weapon was recovered separately, with the assistance of a K9 officer. Another individual was also identified as having ammunition in his possession. Both were taken into custody. At no time were BU students in any danger, as this situation did not take place on school property. We commend the quick response from BISD Police to this event."
12News is working to learn if the students face any charges.
