Pictures, drawings, news articles were all found inside this time capsule that was buried under Tugboat Island twenty years ago April 21, 1996.

Dozens of volunteers at Port Neches Riverfront Park helped build the popular playground. On Thursday, they reunited again to take a trip down memory lane.

"It's wonderful," original Tugboat Island committee member Connie Seal said. "I was surprised what good condition all the items in it were, and they held up very well."

Volunteers from all over Southeast Texas helped raised more than 200 thousand dollars to build Tugboat Island. They built it in nine days with help from Port Neches residents who actually designed the playground.

"When you look at the pictures, the children designed the playground and they drew pictures, and we put those in this time capsule," Port Neches Mayor Glenn Johnson said.

One of them was Hunter Barber, who was there to see his own drawings with his mother, who also helped create Tugboat Island.

"He was out here everyday," Forest Barber said. "Other families and their kids were here too. We were like a whole crew of kids that did their part too."

Mayor Johnson said Tugboat Island is the biggest playground in Southeast Texas.
