City of Port Neches working to prevent erosion on riverfront

Every year, they lose about a foot of shoreline to erosion.

PORT NECHES, Texas — Every day, Bill Henry sits along the Riverfront in his truck.

"I either listen to music, or read, or listen to a radio program."

He even knows down to the minute when certain visitors will be there.

He grew up in Port Neches, so he's no stranger to the area.

He just found out the river he's been admiring for 50 years is getting a facelift.

The city says erosion is eating up parts of the shoreline.

"Erosion is always going to be present," said Bill. "We're always going to have hurricanes."

Henry believes it's a small problem that is costing the city big bucks.

"If you put in a big marina, it would be sort of a natural barrier and a money-making venture too."

The city says this has been in the works for three years.

Every year, they lose about a foot of shoreline to erosion.

They are working to put sheet pile in an area of the Neches River Wheelhouse and the park parking lot.

It's defined as a structure that retains soil using steel sheets with interlocking edges.

"Ultimately, what we anticipate the project to be in the eight to $900,000 range," said City Manager Andre Winer. "This has been a project that has been ongoing for the last several years."

The city manager says this is just one piece of a bigger project for the city that included improved wastewater, system improvements, and roadway work.

"The benefit is the city retains the land that it owns, and it doesn't lose it to the river," said Winer.

Bill says he would love to see change, but he believes there is a better way to go about changing the place he's loved since childhood.
