MONEY MAY: Mom's scheme to swap out generic for brand name food saves money

In a battle of the brands one Southeast Texas mom is getting creative with a sneaky way to cut costs.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A Southeast Texas mom is on a mission to save some money and she's not afraid of tricking her kids in the process.

In a household of fussy eaters, she's gotten creative. Late at night, when her five kids are asleep she sneaks into the pantry and refills containers of name brand foods with their generic counterparts.

She asked to remain anonymous so her kids won't find out about her scheme.

“The reason I started changing products was because I had very picky eaters,” a southeast Texas mom, said.

She says she can save about $1 to $2 on every generic brand over the name brand -- but the question is -- can her children tell the difference.

"Sometimes they could, sometimes they couldn't."

If her kids spot a generic bag, she says, there’s no way they would “even attempt to eat it.”

This trick works best with younger children.

We put this to the test with the kids by giving them chips and corn dog options.

They passed on the generic corn dogs because they "looked different" but there was some success with the chips.

One child describes the generic brand of chips as "cheesier" then the original Doritos.

During a time when every dollar counts it can be worth a little sneakiness to switch things up in your kitchen.
