Samsung says new Texas plant 'on target' amid reports it's delaying chip production

Samsung's $17 billion investment into the Taylor community is expected to bring in about 2,000 jobs and fuel massive growth.

TAYLOR, Texas — A new report says chip production at the new Samsung plant northeast of Austin will be delayed.

According to Bloomberg News, which cites a news outlet in South Korea, Samsung's brand new $17 billion plant in Taylor won't produce chips until at least 2025.

Right now it remains unclear why Samsung is pushing production back at the facility, which is set to open next year.

According to Taylor Mayor Brandt Rydell, the $17 billion investment into the community is expected to bring in about 2,000 jobs and fuel massive growth in the small town.

“We certainly anticipate from 2020 to 2030, Taylor will be one of the most rapidly growing cities in Texas, if not the nation, I would anticipate. Having an economic project out here on a scale that few have seen in the world,” Rydell told KVUE's Matt Fernandez in November.

Rydell said Taylor is expanding its wastewater treatment plant with the area's water supplier as well as improving roads. The first part of the new Samsung Highway is already complete.

Samsung provided KVUE with a statement regarding the status of the plant, simply clarifying that the company still plans to have the plant operational by the end of 2024:

"The Samsung Taylor [lab] is on target to be operational by the end of 2024. We cannot comment on timing for mass production."

Williamson County Judge Bill Gravell and City of Taylor Mayor Brandt Rydell provided the following statement:

“Williamson County and Taylor have a strong relationship with Samsung. Samsung has been an amazing partner and has always delivered on its promises to Williamson County and the City of Taylor. The construction at the plant in Taylor is still ongoing and there have not been any issues with local permitting regarding the construction. The timeline for manufacturing at the plant is completely at the discretion of Samsung. We look forward to continuing this strong relationship with Samsung for generations to come. “
