Southeast Texans bask in the holiday spirit at Beaumont's 6th Annual Tree Lightning ceremony

People from all over Southeast Texas embraced the chilly weather to enjoy the festivities.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Southeast Texans are basking in the holiday spirit after attending Beaumont's annual tree lightning ceremony in downtown.

The ceremony was the city's 6th annual and took place at the Downtown Event Centre.

"We are super excited to have everyone out. It's a free family event and we always try to add a new attraction," said City of Beaumont Director of Event Services, Emily Wheeler.

That new attraction? Snow sledding!

"So, it is snowing in Beaumont tonight and we are just really excited to see everyone," Wheeler said. "When the tree is lit and the fireworks go off, there's nothing better than fireworks."

People from all over Southeast Texas embraced the chilly weather to enjoy the festivities.

"We came here last year for the first time. It was just a lot, a lot of fun," Beaumont resident, Loretta Jack said.

"We had all our clothes prepared so we would not be cold," Beaumont resident, Jackie Guillory said.

For Loretta and Jackie, Christmas is one of the most special times of the year.

"Just to celebrate together, get together, and be with your family," Loretta said.

"Christ's birthday, and family, friends to get together," Jackie said.

Some of Beaumont's finest were out showing their Christmas spirit and kids couldn't wait to get a selfie with the walking Christmas tree.

"I mean, that's what Christmas really is about. Just being in the holiday spirit and coming out here and enjoying this free event tonight," said Beaumont Convention and Visitors Bureau Marketing Director, Christiana Lokey.

Beaumont Mayor Roy West even helped count down to the big moment to kick off the holiday season by flipping the switch on the massive Christmas tree.

"Community, it's about family, it's about recognizing the good in this world. This is a great way to bring in the season," he said.

If you missed out, the holiday fun isn't over.

On Sunday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m., The Texas Tenors are performing for the "Home for the Holidays Symphony Concert" at the Julie Rogers Theatre.
