GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas — Some folks are not letting the weather stop them from enjoying Go Topless Jeep weekend. But it's a much different scene at Crystal Beach from last year. High tides and gloomy skies are dampening the atmosphere.
It's not what most people would call beach weather, with dark skies and water covering most of the beach, but whether that prevents a huge crowd this weekend remains to be seen.
Galveston County officials requested extra manpower this weekend for extra patrols after last year's chaos. Six people were taken to the hospital by helicopter and more than 80 people were arrested at the 2019 Go Topless Jeep weekend.
Texas DPS is helping Galveston County by sending a group of state troopers to the Bolivar Peninsula on Thursday.
However, businesses in the area, like the restaurant Steve's Landing, depend on large crowds.
"Already looking at reservations for tonight, we are booked up for the dinner rush time," Steve's Landing manager Rahib Rahman said. "So, we're still staying optimistic that people are still coming down."
Rahman said he noticed fewer people on the beach than usual as of Friday.
The Galveston County Sheriff's Office took note as well, discussing if the extra law enforcement is necessary throughout the weekend, which will likely depend on the weather.
The current forecast predicts about two inches of rain over Crystal Beach on Saturday.
