BROOKELAND, Texas — If you're a longtime viewer of 12News, you've probably seen our 12News Outdoors reporter J.D. Batten. Well we got the chance to go out on the lake with him to see how fishing is done in Southeast Texas.
But before we headed to the lake, we had to stop to grab some bait, and learn a little bit about lure pricing. What I learned from the expert himself is if you're paying $15 or more for a lure, you're probably overpaying.
We made it out to Lake Sam Rayburn and launched the beautiful 12News Outdoors Boat. J.D. took me to all his best spots, and we immediately started to find fish and reeling in lunkers.
We did catch our fair share of fish, and I enjoyed my time with J.D. relaxing on the water and reeling in the catch of the day.
J.D. says, my skills are coming right along.
"Man, we have had a blast today. Brandon's head of sports for KBMT 12, Beaumont TV station, and he wanted to go fishing. I said, come to the lake and I'll show you. He said, I've never been fishing in my life like this. And believe me, I believe him, he's never been like this, but he has caught fish. We've had a great time. It's a little bit windy, that's okay. We managed to stay out of the wind and catch crappie like this. What you think?" J.D. said.
I can confirm that we got two good ones. I got the honor of learning from the master himself. So now, I know what I'm doing just a little bit. I still, need to get some practice though!
"We're gonna have him up again, and each time we go, he's gonna learn more and more, and then he'll be able to fish on his own one day in the spring of '08 maybe," J.D. joked with me.
We had a great time out on the water and I'm looking forward to going out on the lake with J.D. again soon.
