Women's shelter receives almost $1 million grant for Harvey rebuild

The shelter offers services to families in Newton, Jasper, Tyler, Hardin, and Jefferson Counties.

A non-profit providing safe temporary housing for victims of domestic violence received grant funding to rebuild post-Harvey.

The $964,586 grant comes from the Rebuild Texas Fund, started by two nonprofits--the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation and the One Star Foundation--just after Hurricane Harvey.

“We are grateful for the Rebuild Texas Fund’s dedication and passion for rebuilding and revitalizing communities, including our own, Beaumont, impacted by Hurricane Harvey,” interim Executive Director, Family Services of Southeast Texas Deborah Tomov said in a release.

“Through this generous grant, we will be able to rebuild the inside of our 65 bed shelter, which provides secure housing for victims of domestic violence.”

The shelter offers services to families in Newton, Jasper, Tyler, Hardin, and Jefferson Counties.

The nonprofit also runs a transitional housing program, Sunshine Cove Apartments, for women leaving the shelter and working to begin a new life away from their abuser.

Family Services of Southeast Texas also has a counseling center that offers affordable solution-oriented counseling and educational services such as violence intervention and effective anger management programs for numerous mental health and family-related issues as well as safe-house properties in Jefferson and Jasper Counties.

Shelter services are free and confidential.
