Two Louisiana women dead after one car accident in Newton County

The driver, a 44-year-old female, and the front passenger, a 17-year-old female, were pronounced dead at the scene.

BURKEVILLE, Texas — Two people died in a one car accident in Newton County Saturday afternoon.

The crash happened on TX 63 in Newton County near Burkeville when a 2005 Mercury car going eastbound on TX 63 tried to pass another vehicle, but could not due to a passing car around 3:45 p.m. June 15, Texas DPS Sgt. Stephanie Davis said in a news release. When the vehicle tried to get back into its original lane, it lost control, Davis said. 

The car crashed into a ditch and hit a concrete culvert, then rolled down a steep embankment, DPS troopers said. 

The driver, Jacqui Warner, 44, and the front passenger, Gabriel Warner, 17, in the Mercury were pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Mike Greer at the scene. Both were from Louisiana.

Two 7-year-old boys were also seriously injured. One had to be taken by medical helicopter to a hospital in Louisiana, the other by ambulance to Jasper Memorial Hospital.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) can confirm that 44-year-old Jacqui Warner of Louisiana was the driver of the Mercury passenger vehicle that was involved in the single vehicle crash on SH 63 in Newton County.  The crash occurred approximately twelve (12) miles east of Burkeville.  Jacqui Warner and her front seat passenger, 17-year-old Gabriel Warner, were both pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Mike Greer at the scene.

There are no additional updates on the medical condition of the two minor children.

At approximately 3:45p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers responded to a single vehicle crash on SH 63 in Newton County.  The crash occurred near Burkeville, Texas.

Initial reports indicate that a 2005 Mercury passenger vehicle was traveling eastbound on SH 63.  The Mercury attempted to pass another vehicle, but met an oncoming passenger vehicle.  To avoid a head-on collision, the driver of the Mercury veered back to the right causing the driver to lose control.  The vehicle traveled off the road, into a ditch and struck a concrete culvert.  After striking the culvert, the vehicle rolled down a steep embankment and came to rest in its top.

The driver, a 44-year-old female, and the front passenger, a 17-year-old female, of the Mercury were pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Mike Greer at the scene.  Both were from Louisiana.

The two additional passengers were both 7-year-old boys.  One child was transported by ambulance to Jasper Memorial hospital with serious injuries.  The second child was transported by medical helicopter to a hospital in Louisiana with serious injuries.

All information is preliminary as Troopers continue to investigate this fatal crash.
