Sewer line rupture spills 1 million gallons in Port Arthur over several days

An estimated 1 million gallons of sewage spilled in Port Arthur over more than three days following a line break.

The spill of "untreated domestic wastewater" happened Friday evening, February 9, at 5 p.m. through Monday February 12, according to a notice from the City of Port Arthur.

The area affected by the spill is described as being near the main lift station ditch in the 5400 block of the Proctor Street extension.

The cause of the spill described as a "36' line rupture causing structural failure due to pipe ductile iron piping decay" has been corrected and the spill has been contained according to the notice.

Residents should avoid coming in contact with "waste material, soil or water" in the affected area the notice said.

If you do come into contact with the sewage and bathe and wash their clothes thoroughly the notice said.
