Lamar Police urge caution following incident being shared in Southeast Texas via Facebook

The woman tried telling Patterson that classes were canceled then asked how old she was

BEAUMONT — A Lamar University student is speaking out about a strange incident on campus.

Breland Patterson says a woman in a car approached her and offered her a ride to her dorm Friday morning off Rolfe Christopher Drive.

"She kept saying you can’t hear me, you can’t understand me you should come closer," said Patterson.

The woman tried telling Patterson that classes were canceled then asked how old she was.

"It was just weird, she offered to take me back to my dorms and asked if I was a freshman or sophomore," said Patterson.

Patterson walked away after the woman asked her to come closer to the car.

She said she didn’t realize how strange the incident was until she called her family members.

"I feel like if it was more secluded or darker I wouldn't have been here today,” said Patterson.

A Facebook post made by Patterson's aunt has been shared hundreds of times on social media.

"It’s gotten so big that people I don't even know have walked up to me," said Patterson.

Patterson said she called Lamar Police last Friday afternoon about the incident but police said they did not receive a call that day.

Officers said they reached out to Patterson this morning after they saw a Facebook post and filed an official report.

Patterson said ever since the incident she has walked on campus with a tazor and pepper spray to protect herself just in case.

"You hear stuff like this happening on the news and social media all the time but you don’t think this could happen to you," said Patterson.

Lamar university police are investigating this incident and they want to emphasize if you see anything suspicious, call LUPD at 880-7777.
