Boy Scouts letting girls into programs

Today they announced that girls will be allowed to join it's two biggest programs Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts.

BEAUMONT — Within the last year the Boys Scouts of America has expressed plans to start recruiting girls into programs within their organization.

Today they announced that girls will be allowed to join it’s two biggest programs Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts.

"Starting this fall we will be inviting girls to join cub scouts and in 2019 we will be inviting the older girls into boy scouts, which is now called scouts," Les Bentley with the Three Rivers Council tells 12news.

Bentley says this isn’t anything new, a program called Venture has been co-ed for years now.

“We’ve had girls in the program since 1970,” Bentley said.

Assistant Scout Master Don Bernard says Boy Scouts have had the opportunity to door more outdoors activities than Girl Scouts.

"We have a lot of great programs, a lot of great programs that the girl scouts don’t have," Bernard said.

Bernard says he’s happy the Boys Scouts of America are giving girls the same opportunities as the boys.

"It's a positive thing, it's giving them an opportunity and like I said we've got some great programs," Bernard said.
