Warrant issued for Lake Charles man accused of hit-and-run killing two dogs in front of daycare

The pedestrian told police the car narrowly missed them, but struck and killed the two dogs they were walking on a leash.

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana — The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office issued a warrant for a man accused of a hit-and-run barely missing a pedestrian and killing their two dogs in front of a daycare. 

Detectives said their investigation found the driver of the car involved in the hit-and-run was Gabriel Sonnier, 22, of Lake Charles. They tried to find him, but found out that he left the state after the accident. 

The hit-and-run happened in front of the Leap into Learning Day Care on Ham Reid Road near Lake Street around 8:30 p.m. June 12. The pedestrian told police the car narrowly missed them, but struck and killed the two dogs they were walking on a leash. 

Judge Guy Bradberry issued a $185,000 warrant for Sonnier’s arrest July 3 for hit and run driving, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, obstruction of justice and aggravated cruelty to animals.
